PARIS, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- A motorist was arrested on Wednesday after deliberately driving his car into several people on the island of Oleron, in France's Charente-Maritime department, local media reported.
About nine people were injured in the attack, Thibault Brechkoff, mayor of Dolus-d'Oleron, told French broadcaster BFMTV. The suspect, aged around 30, was apprehended shortly after the incident, according to the mayor.
After hitting the victims, the driver reportedly got out of his vehicle and attempted to set it on fire, BFMTV reported. Police arrived quickly at the scene and arrested him after some resistance.
An investigation is underway. French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said on social media platform X that he would travel to the scene. ■
